STEM Excellence Scholarship
For students building careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics — the fields where New Zealand needs graduates most.
The STEM Excellence Scholarship supports students entering disciplines where demand for skilled graduates consistently outstrips supply. It exists to remove cost as a reason not to pursue a technical degree.
Applications are assessed on academic record in quantitative subjects, but also on evidence of curiosity outside the classroom — a project, a competition, a piece of code, a repair, an experiment.
What this scholarship covers
Areas of study supported under the STEM Excellence award
Sciences
Biology, chemistry, physics, environmental and earth sciences at both levels.
Computer Science & A.I.
Software, data, artificial intelligence and the Academy’s integrated Computer Science programme.
Engineering and applied technology
Applied and design-led technical study, including laboratory-based programmes.
Mathematics
Pure and applied mathematics, statistics and quantitative modelling.
Who can apply
- Enrolment, or an offer of place, in a science, technology, engineering or mathematics programme
- A strong record in mathematics and science subjects at secondary or prior tertiary level
- Evidence of practical interest — a project, competition, portfolio or work experience
- A short statement on the problem you want to work on
Beyond the tuition award
STEM recipients receive priority access to the Academy’s laboratory and computing facilities outside timetabled hours, and are invited to the annual research showcase where undergraduate projects are presented alongside postgraduate work.
